Date: 19/04/2013

“Creativity” Film Show, jointly organized by the Customs & Excise Department, Intellectual Property Department and Intellectual Property Right Protection Alliance (IPRPA), was held at the Customs Headquarter Building on the evening of 19 April. We were honoured to have Mr Michael Y K Kwan, Acting Senior Superintendent, Head of Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau of Customs & Excise and Ms Jenny Wong, Head (Marketing Division) of Intellectual Property as our officiating Guests. Some 100 Youth Ambassadors, members of IRPRA and “I-pledge” members participated in this event. Our heartfelt thanks also went to Mr Marc Forino and Mr Jose L. Sandoval of Consulate General of the United States of America Hong Kong and Macau who joined us in this film show.

Mr Michael Kwan and Ms Jenny Wong gave their welcome speeches to the audience. Both of them mentioned that “World Intellectual Property Day” this year focused on “Creativity : The Next Generation”, ‘ “Creativity” tied in with the theme of the film show and “The Next Generation” represented our some 100 Youth Ambassadors, and “I-pledge” members presented.’

The event was launched with the screening of 5 pieces of work from “Hong Kong Heart”. The film makers aimed to show the new generation’s attitude towards current affairs and illustrate the culture and human relations in Hong Kong.

A short video titled “Upload Download, We Should Say No”, produced by the students of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was screened afterwards. This video depicted that whilst the general public could broaden their perspective with the easy access to movies and music over the internet, they might inadvertently involved in internet piracy activities and jeopardize the creative industry. The students of PolyU emphasized the importance of copyright in sustaining and protecting the creative industry.

Moreover, the winners of “Hong Kong Heart” Short Video Competition and the students of PolyU shared with the audiences how online infringement of copyright would undermine the movie industry. After the sharing session, a discussion panel was held with YAS members who participated in the Study Tour to Zhaoqing last month. The moderator, Executive Director & General Manger of IFACT-GC, Mr Sam Ho, explored with the YAS members on how copyright protection could ensure creativity to flourish, and the harm that might be caused by internet piracy activities.

The film show concluded at 8:30 p.m. and all participants enjoyed a fruitful and interesting evening.
