2014 Piracy & Malware Liberal Studies IES Competition

In order to strengthen the youngsters’ awareness of protecting Intellectual Property Rights, the Customs and Excise Department, the Intellectual Property Department and the Business Software Alliance (BSA) jointly organized the “2014 Piracy & Malware Liberal Studies Independent Enquiry Study Competition”. The grand final and the award presentation ceremony were being held at the Customs Headquarters Buildings on 30th April 2014.

Five teams of secondary school students from Po Leung Kuk No.1 W.H. Cheung College, HKCCCU Logos Academy and YCH Lim Por Yen Secondary School entered the final presentation session. Judges of the competition were: Head of Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau, Mr. Lee Hon-wah; Director of Intellectual Property, Mr. Peter Cheung; Senior Consultant of HKCERT, Mr. Leung Siu-cheong; Vice President of HK Liberal Studies Organization, Mr. Lai Tim-cheung; and the representative of BSA, Mr. Alan Chan.

Presentations from the competing teams were of high standard. The participants, apart from exploring the reasons and consequences on using pirated software, they also suggested comprehensive recommendations on preventing the usage of pirated software. Questioning session came right after each team’s presentation and the participants were required to further elaborate their findings as raised out by the judges. All the participants performed in great confidence and demonstrated multi-perspective thinking skills, analytical skills and presentation skills through the interactive session.
